Technology Architecture

BYD’s Australian vehicle range spans two powertrain families, each built on a distinct technology platform.

Pure Electric (BEV) Platform

BYD’s battery-electric models are built on the e-Platform 3.0 and e-Platform 3.0 Evo. These platforms incorporate Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery integration, in which the battery structure forms part of the vehicle’s body, and an 8-in-1 electric powertrain (BYD’s marketing description). The Blade Battery — BYD’s lithium iron phosphate cell design — is a key component of this architecture. The Blade Battery is described by BYD as offering improved structural safety and thermal performance compared with conventional cell formats, subject to manufacturer specifications.

Super Hybrid (PHEV) Platforms

Plug-in hybrid BYD models are built on one of two platforms: DM-i, which prioritises fuel economy, or DMO, which is oriented towards off-road and utility performance. Both platforms combine an internal combustion engine with an electric drive system and a rechargeable battery. For technical detail on how these systems operate in specific models, refer to the official owner’s manual or consult an authorised BYD dealer.

No LPG, CNG, autogas, or diesel powertrains are offered or described by BYD Automotive Australia. The warranty handbook explicitly excludes damage from unauthorised modifications and third-party conversions.

Warranty Overview

BYD vehicles sold in Australia are covered under the BYD Warranty and Service Handbook 2026. The headline terms, subject to manufacturer specifications, are as follows:

  • New Vehicle Warranty: 6 years or 150,000 km, whichever occurs first. The period begins on the date of first registration (in Western Australia, from the date of delivery).
  • Power Battery and Drive Unit (drive motor and drive motor controller): 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever occurs first, with a guaranteed minimum of 70% battery capacity retention.
  • Genuine Spare Parts (imported by BYD Australia, purchased by the owner, and installed by an authorised BYD retailer): 12 months from the date of purchase.
  • Paint Application Defects: 1 year.
  • 12V Lead-Acid Starting Battery: 12 months or 20,000 km, whichever occurs first.
  • Emergency Charging and Discharging Device (AC charging connection device and discharge connection device): 12 months.
  • Tyres: Not covered by the BYD warranty — tyre manufacturers’ own warranties apply.

The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, regular maintenance items, work carried out by anyone other than an authorised BYD service centre, failure to follow correct charging procedures, accident or flood damage, racing or competitive use, loading or towing beyond manufacturer specifications, use of non-genuine or non-recommended parts that cause damage, or unauthorised software or hardware modifications. For the full list of exclusions, refer to the official owner’s manual or visit https://bydautomotive.com.au/service-and-warranty.

The handbook includes battery care guidance: when a vehicle will be unused for more than 7 days, keep the power battery at 40–60% state of charge. If the vehicle will be unused for more than 3 months, fully charge then discharge back to 40–60% every 3 months. Recharge promptly if the state of charge drops to 0%, as failure to do so is not covered by warranty. A full charge from below 10% via AC charging every three to six months is recommended to aid range estimation. In temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, charge the vehicle right after use.

Servicing Intervals

For both electric (EV series) and plug-in hybrid (DM series) BYD models, scheduled services are due at:

  • 20,000 km / 12 months
  • 40,000 km / 24 months
  • 60,000 km / 36 months
  • 80,000 km / 48 months
  • 100,000 km / 60 months
  • 120,000 km / 72 months

Whichever milestone — distance or time — occurs first triggers the service. Under severe operating conditions, intervals may need to be shortened; the specific items inspected or replaced at each visit are listed in the official owner’s manual.

For DM (plug-in hybrid) vehicles, an initial run-in service is also due at six months or 3,500 km of HEV trip operation, whichever comes first. All servicing must be carried out by an authorised BYD dealer or authorised BYD service centre to maintain warranty coverage. Capped-price servicing details are not published in the sources used for this guide; confirm with BYD Automotive Australia for current pricing.

Models Not in This Guide

Several BYD models — including the Atto 1, Atto 2, Seal 6, Sealion 5, Sealion 8, and Denza D9 — are not part of the six-model lineup this guide covers. The sources used for this guide do not include specifications, pricing, or availability dates for these vehicles. Availability and details must be confirmed with an authorised BYD dealer or on the official BYD Australia website.
